How to install Jamb Plate sign
Step-by-step guide for installing elevator jamb plate signs on both sides of an elevator door, including placement height and ADA-compliant design elements (even if you're not labeling it ADA):
Tools & Materials Needed
- Elevator jamb plate signs (4" x 4", raised letters, braille, contrasting background)
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or painter’s tape
- Level
- Double-sided industrial tape (pre-applied or separate)
- Cleaning cloth and alcohol wipes
- Optional: drill, screws (if permanent installation is required)
Installation Location: Side of Elevator Door
- Both sides of the elevator doorway (on the elevator jamb, not the door itself)
- Located at each floor the elevator services
- Typically, this means on the door frame that surrounds the elevator cab entrance
Installation Height & Position
- Mounting height:
- The center of the sign should be 60 inches (5 feet) above the finished floor.
- The bottom edge of the sign should be roughly 58 inches from the floor (based on standard 4" x 4" signs).
- Horizontal placement:
- Place the sign on the side jamb (vertical portion of the frame), centered left to right.
- Ensure it's on the latch side of the elevator door if only one side can be accessed.
Surface Preparation
- Clean the surface with an alcohol wipes to remove dust, oil, or residue.
- Let the surface fully dry before applying anything.
Installation Steps
- Mark the spot using a pencil or painter’s tape at 60 inches from the floor to the center of where the sign will be placed.
- Use a level to make sure your sign will be installed straight.
- Peel off the backing of the double-sided industrial adhesive.
- Align the sign carefully to your markings.
- Press firmly for at least 30 seconds to ensure good adhesion.
- Repeat the same steps on the opposite side of the elevator doorway.
Repeat Per Floor
Install signs at the same height and style at each elevator landing on every floor.
Notes:
- Ensure strong contrast between text and background (e.g., white on black).
- Use raised letters and Braille placed beneath the floor number.
- Avoid obstructions (e.g., do not place signs behind open elevator doors or near protruding wall features)
