Frequently Asked Questions

About Elevator signs.

Q: Do your elevator signs have braille and raised letters?
A: Yes, all our elevator signs include both raised letters and braille for accessibility and safety.

Raised letters provide tactile feedback for individuals with low or no vision. Braille characters are positioned beneath the raised numbers to support blind users who read by touch. These features promote independent navigation and are vital during emergencies when visibility may be low.

Q: How do I install the sign?
A: Installing your elevator jamb plate sign is simple. Follow these steps:

  1. Determine the Location:
    • Install the sign on both left and right jambs (sides) of the elevator entrance on each floor.
    • Mount on the stationary frame—not on the elevator door.

    2. Measure the Height:

    • Place the sign with its center at exactly 60 inches (5 feet) above the finished floor.

    3. Prepare the Surface:

    • Clean and dry the mounting area.
    • For tape: use alcohol to improve adhesion.

    4. Mount the Sign:

    • Peel off the backing from the pre-applied 3M VHB tape.
    • Firmly press and hold the sign in place for 30 seconds.
    • Optional: Use screws (if applicable) via pre-drilled holes for a permanent mount.

    5. Repeat on the Opposite Side:

    • Ensure identical placement on both sides for compliance and visibility.

Q: What does the star symbol (★) next to a floor number mean on an elevator sign?
A: The star symbol (★) indicates the main entry level of the building, also known as the main egress level. This is the primary floor used for entry and exit and is essential for emergency response.

Q: Why is the main entry level marked with a star?
A: The star helps firefighters and emergency personnel quickly identify the building’s main exit floor during emergencies. It is a requirement of national and local building and fire safety codes.

Q: Is the star only used on the first floor?
A: Not always. The star appears next to whichever floor is designated as the main entry, which could be floor 1, ground level, or even another level depending on the building layout.

Q: Is the star required by code?
A: Yes. Codes like the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA require a star to be used to mark the main egress level to ensure compliance and safety during emergencies.

Q: Where should the starred floor number appear?
A: It must appear on elevator jamb plates (next to elevator doors on each floor) and on the elevator control panel inside the cab, clearly identifying the main entry level.
