ELEVATOR ENTRANCES (Each Floor)
Jamb Plate Signs installed on both sides of the elevator door
- Includes floor number
- Raised lettering and Braille required
“IN CASE OF FIRE, USE STAIRS” sign posted next to every elevator entrance
STAIR ID+FLOOR NUMBER and Elevator ID signs posted where required (e.g., “Stair A”, “Elevator 1”)
INSIDE ELEVATOR CAB
Inspection Certificate Frame (6” x 9”)
- Securely mounted inside cab
- Must contain current NYC inspection certificate
Capacity Plate
- Shows maximum weight and passenger limit
Fire Service Instruction Signage
- If elevator has Phase I & II firefighter service
Optional: “DO NOT HOLD ELEVATOR DOORS” sign
- Prevents damage and reduces service calls
ELEVATOR MACHINE / MOTOR / MECHANICAL ROOM DOOR
Door labeled with one of the following:
- “ELEVATOR MACHINE ROOM”
- “ELEVATOR MOTOR ROOM”
- “ELEVATOR MECHANICAL ROOM”
- “ELEVATOR ROOM”
Lettering is permanent, durable, and clearly visible
Recommended sign near the door:
- “KEY TO ELEVATOR MACHINE ROOM / MOTOR ROOM / CONTROL CABINET LOCATED AT: [insert location]”
ELEVATOR PIT & SHAFTWAY AREAS
Sign near pit access hatch reads:
- “ELEVATOR PIT”
Sign near shaft way access reads:
- “ELEVATOR SHAFTWAY ”
All signs must be:
- Durable
- Securely mounted
- Weather- and corrosion-resistant
FREIGHT ELEVATORS (If applicable)
“FREIGHT USE ONLY” sign posted near elevator car entrance
EVACUATION PLAN
Evacuation plan with detail floor number in a frame or directly print on a sign
Install: Each elevator landing or building lobby.
ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDED SIGNAGE
“KEY TO ELEVATOR MACHINE ROOM LOCATED AT: [insert location]” posted in common area or building office
“DO NOT BLOCK ELEVATOR DOORS” (while not legally required by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB), serves a critical preventive and operational function, especially in residential and commercial settings.)

In all instances, the total liability of Elevator Signs NYC and its affiliated companies for any product or transaction shall not exceed one U.S. dollar ($1.00), regardless of the nature of the claim, including but not limited to claims of defect, negligence, or non-compliance.
By completing a purchase, the customer expressly agrees to these terms, acknowledges their responsibility, and waives any right to seek damages beyond the stated limit. These terms are binding upon purchase and supersede any conflicting verbal or written warranties or representations unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
