Elevator Inspector’s 10-Point Arrival Checklist
1. Verify Certificate Frame & Inspection Posting
- Confirm the inspection certificate posted inside the elevator cab.
- Check that the frame is secure, legible, and contains the current certificate.
2. Check Elevator Machine Room Access
- Ensure machine room door is:
- Self-closing, self-locking
- Clearly labeled (e.g., “ELEVATOR MACHINE ROOM”)
- Accessible only to authorized personnel
3. Confirm Elevator Identification Signage
- Elevator ID signage posted above or beside cab door (e.g., “Elevator 1”).
4. Inspect Jamb Plate Floor Number Signage
- Both sides of elevator entrance at each floor must:
- Display raised floor number
- Include Braille
- Use contrasting colors and meet ADA standards
5. Verify Fire Emergency Instruction Signage
- Check for the “IN CASE OF FIRE USE STAIRS” sign at each landing.
- Must include:
- Flame pictogram
- Raised lettering and Braille
- Placement next to call button
- Must include:
6. Check Capacity Plate Inside Car
- Capacity plate must clearly state:
- Max weight (in lbs or kg)
- Max number of persons
- Plate should be securely mounted and easy to read.
7. Inspect Cleanliness & Condition of Pit and Machine Room
- Pit and room must be:
- Clean, dry, well-lit
- Free of debris, oil, or storage items
8. Test Operational Functionality
- Inspector may ride the elevator to:
- Check leveling accuracy at floors
- Observe for abnormal sounds, vibration, or delays
- Verify door reopening and emergency stop
9. Review Elevator Logs and Maintenance Records
- Inspector may request to see:
- Maintenance logs
- Violation corrections
- Proof of monthly inspections by a licensed company
10. Test Firefighter Emergency Operation (FEO)
- In buildings required to have Firefighter Phase I & II:
- Confirm proper operation of FEO key switch
- Test recall and manual operation modes

By purchasing from Elevator Signs NYC and its affiliated companies, the customer agrees to fully indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the company, its owners, agents, employees, and affiliates from any and all claims, fines, violations, inspections failures, legal actions, or penalties arising from the use, misplacement, interpretation, or non-compliance of signage with any code, law, or regulation.
The customer assumes full liability for:*Ensuring proper sign placement *Verifying content accuracy *Complying with all applicable laws and codes *Consulting with professionals to ensure lawful installation and use Elevator Signs NYC shall not be held responsible for any loss, cost, damage, or consequence arising from a failed inspection, violation, or regulatory issue.
In all instances, the total liability of Elevator Signs NYC and its affiliated companies for any product or transaction shall not exceed one U.S. dollar ($1.00), regardless of the nature of the claim, including but not limited to claims of defect, negligence, or non-compliance.
By completing a purchase, the customer expressly agrees to these terms, acknowledges their responsibility, and waives any right to seek damages beyond the stated limit. These terms are binding upon purchase and supersede any conflicting verbal or written warranties or representations unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
